Kinja'd!!!

My parents have a great Chris Craft that we only use a couple times a year. They recently sold their truck and now have nothing to tow the boat with. I asked them if I could use the boat if I get a truck and they will let me use the boat when I wish but they will get to use my truck for their boating trips.

Sadly, I will have to sell the awesome Minivan and replace it with a big four door pickup.

So to pull 4,000 pounds of boat, I figure that a 2012-14 Ram 1500 with the 390 Hemi will do just fine running up and down the canyons at 80 MPH. We need a crew cab with a front bench for our three punky children. With the front bench my wife can sit by me and the kids won't be packed three abreast in the back.

Kinja'd!!!

The Rams are fun trucks to drive with 390 HP and 405' pounds of torque and coil springs. They seem like a good value and can pull off 20 MPG on the hwy without having to pay $.50 more for diesel. The Chebbies and Fords are too damn expensive and don't have enough power at that price.

I am looking to spend about $25K. I can get the dealers to discount a new 2014 truck from 40K down to 33K but I really don't want the depreciation and additional cost. The brand new 8 speed tranny is slick while getting 22 MPG highway but it's not worth an additional $6,000. The new diesel is cool but a bit slow and expensive

I found a 2012 Ram 1500 crew 4x4 5.7l with 26K miles for $25K.

I really want a Raptor but they hold their value too damn well, 2010s are still selling at 40K!

Any other suggestions for a family/boat hauler?

Buy a Ram 1500. /thread

Seriously, do it. Also try to get the 2013 or newer instead, cause they changed a few things to make it nicer inside.

Buy year old truck. Let some idiot that sells their truck after a year pay for the initial depreciation. Just make sure you get the right options, and rear end ratio.

Well if you're selling a minivan and you want both family and boat hauling capacities, why not go with a newish Dodge Durango V8? Unless you really need the truck bed.

4000 lbs is nothing for even a half ton. Add another 2k lbs for trailer and gear and you are still in half ton territory. But, 3/4 ton will cover your arse well. Bigger brakes and all. Personally, I believe in buying at least 3-4 years old. Still great shape but costs a bunch less. My next truck will be a Ford XL instead of the XLT or Lariat. I will put different wheels on it and not worry about depreciation. All I want is a hitch, AC, cruise and the basics. But I can't get a manual unless I buy a 250 XL.

I have been driving P/U's for many years.

I own a 2014 Ram and love it, however make sure your wife sits in the middle seat before you buy it. It is pretty uncomfortable. I really only have 3 complaints about my truck, the middle seat, the shifter button for the manual control is super slow and finicky and, it won't rev above 4500 if the truck isn't moving. The last one is really only a problem if you take the mufflers off (which you should) and want to make sweet exhaust videos.

Take a look at an Ecoboost F-150. It has slightly less power than the V8 Ram, but more torque, which is what matters. Fuel conomy is also goo, and believe it or not, they do come under $25k. If you don't off road, and live in a warmer climate, I would recommend against 4x4, as it kills fuel economy, however if you need it, you can get it.

a chevy 350 is a 5.7 so yeah I'm guessing a 5.7 is also a 390. wait what.

no the SRT 6.3l is a 392 tho.

You can get a Raptor for less than 40k It just may have looked like this at some point in it's life.

So awesome but 15,000 miles a year of gas would not be awesome.

I would be off road a lot while also fighting blizzards on the way to grandma's house.

I love the technology and performance of the Ecoboost v6, but for the sake of dirty intake valves, moisture in the inter-cooler, turbos that will need to be rebuilt, etc... I must say nay. To protect itself while towing, that motor will need to dump so much fuel to keep its pistons safe.

There are some local rebuilt-title Ecoboost F150s that are tempting but they scare me.

That one I found has a 3.55 rear end, and the sucker who bought it two years ago has eaten most of the depreciation.

For motorcycles and a lower cost I'll go with the Ram.

What about doughnuts? Without the limited slip (anti-spin) will it still do doughnuts?

In that case, unless you want an SUV, the Ram is your best bet.

A 3.73 rear would bet better for towing, but you might lose an MPG.

At the risk of sounding super unjalop, I don't know I have never tried. I shall rectify that tomorrow and let you know. I do know it will fishtail like it's getting paid for it. I can't ever remember the Traction Control kicking in after I turned it off. So it should do donut's pretty well.

The 392 is a 6.4L. 6.42373to be exact.

So I drove to a closed course this morning and hired a professional driver. No doughnuts, even with it off the traction control cuts the power after about 1/2 a rotation.
